Google Tests Ads in AI Mode for Personal Intelligence Users
Google now tests ads in AI Mode for users who connect Gmail and Photos. What changed, what shapes the ads, and what businesses should do now.
- Research

In March, Google said that people who connect Gmail and Google Photos to AI Mode were not seeing ads. On October 16, 2026, it changed course. Google is now testing ads in AI Mode for those users, and the ads can be shaped by what Google learns from their connected apps.
It may be the most personal version of Google search ads so far. Here's what changed, what it means for your business, and what to do about it.
The short answer
- What changed: Google is testing ads in AI Mode for people who connect their apps through Personal Intelligence. Until now, those users saw no ads.
- What powers the ads: The search, the AI answer, and the user's interests. Summaries and inferences from connected apps like Gmail and Photos may also play a role. Google says ads are not based directly on email or photo content.
- What advertisers control: Nothing new. There's no opt-in, opt-out, targeting setting, or separate report for this traffic.
- What to do: Make sure your campaigns can show in AI Mode, make your landing pages crystal clear, and track real conversions, not clicks.
What happened: Google's AI Mode ads test, explained
What is Personal Intelligence? It's an opt-in AI Mode feature. It lets Google's AI use limited information from your connected Google apps, such as Gmail and Google Photos, to give more personal answers. Google uses insights and summaries from those apps, not a full read-out of your inbox. People can disconnect their apps at any time.
The timeline:
- March 2026: Google said, "There are currently no ads for people who choose to connect their apps with AI Mode."
- October 16, 2026: Google confirmed it is "starting to test ads in AI Mode in Search for users who connect their apps through Personal Intelligence" (Search Engine Land).
- October 19, 2026: Google's help page was updated to cover ads for these users (Search Engine Roundtable).
What can shape these ads, according to Google:
- What the person searched
- The context of the AI answer
- The person's interests
- Summaries and inferences drawn from connected apps
What can't shape them:
- Gmail and Photos content used directly
- Sensitive categories such as health, religion, race, or sexual orientation
- Advertisers also get no access to anyone's connected apps
To use Personal Intelligence, people must be 18 or older, have personalized recommendations turned on, and choose to connect their apps. Google hasn't said which countries are in the test or how long it will run.
It wasn't the only AI Mode change that week. On October 15, Google added more links inside AI Mode and AI Overview answers, plus a new top section with "1–2 links you need to complete a specific task" (source). Days earlier, Google confirmed a test of ads for certain pharmaceutical products in AI Mode and AI Overviews (source). The direction is clear: AI answers are becoming a place to advertise, not just a place to research.
What it means for business owners
1. Ads in AI answers are getting more personal
Regular search ads know what someone typed. AI Mode ads for these users can also reflect what Google infers about their life from connected apps: plans, interests, and needs. For a business, that could mean reaching a customer at a more relevant moment. For example, it could reach a homeowner whose AI chat is already planning a renovation.
2. You can't target it, and you can't opt out
Google hasn't announced any new advertiser controls. You can't choose to show ads only to Personal Intelligence users, block them, or see their results separately. As before, AI Mode ads come from your existing campaigns. That makes your campaign setup and your website the only levers you have.
3. Your website writes your ads
Google's AI increasingly builds ad text from your landing pages. That includes AI Max text customization and the automated promotions Google switched on by default on October 12. If your pages are vague, outdated, or full of old offers, your AI Mode ads will be too.
4. Organic AI visibility matters more, not less
Ads will take more space inside AI answers. The free mentions and citations around them still come from your reputation: reviews, real content, and other sites talking about you. Muck Rack's May 2026 study of more than 25 million links found earned media made up 84% of AI citations, and paid content just 0.3% (source). Paying for the ad slot doesn't buy you a mention in the answer itself.
5. Expect customer questions about privacy
Some customers will ask, "Is Google reading my email to show me ads?" Google's answer is no, not directly. But inferences from connected apps can shape ads. If you advertise in sensitive-feeling areas such as finance, legal, or home security, keep your ad copy helpful and never creepy.
What to do this week
- Check that your campaigns can show in AI Mode. Google has said ads in AI Mode and AI Overviews come from Search campaigns using broad match or AI Max, plus Performance Max and Shopping campaigns (JumpFly summary of Google's guidance). If you only run exact-match Search campaigns, you're probably not in AI Mode at all.
- Rewrite your landing pages for AI. Put one clear offer, your service area, prices or price ranges, and your proof (reviews, photos, certifications) near the top. Google's AI reads these pages to write and match your ads.
- Remove anything outdated. Delete expired promotions and old campaign pages. Google can now pull deals from your site into ads automatically.
- Track conversions, not clicks. You can't see AI Mode traffic on its own, so judge your campaigns by calls, booked jobs, and sales. Import offline conversions from your CRM if you can.
- Build the reputation AI quotes. Ask for reviews, earn local press and directory mentions, and publish content with real experience. That's how you show up in the free part of the answer, next to the ads. Our GEO 101 guide walks through it.
- Watch for the rollout. It's a test today. If Google expands it or adds controls, we'll update this post.
